Artist and educator Catherine Allen exhibits a body of work capturing the unbounded imaginations of children’s early representations of self. Over the past two years, Allen collaborated with children ages 3 – 7 years to draw portraits of themselves and their families and then “inflated” these images into jewellery objects. Allen’s background in science informs her practice of electroforming: growing metal over sculpted wax which is then melted away, creating hollow pieces which are finally enamelled to reflect the original drawing’s colours.
Catherine Allen will be offering two free, family friendly workshops during the exhibition where visitors are invited to draw self portraits which will be turned into pendants. These will be held in the gallery Saturday June 9 and 23 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., call 902-492-2522 to RSVP.
The creation of this work was generously supported by Arts Nova Scotia.
